Players start the game with the choice of selecting one primary school to play as from an option of seven schools under the Elemental and Spirit school categories, which includes Balance. Each school has their own strengths and weaknesses, playstyle, and contribution to a team, and some schools work better with certain schools compared to others.
Secondary schools are those that fall under the Astral and Ancient school categories, and they provide extra niche benefits that help a player further their playstyle.

PvP: Balance wizards control the flow of pips, mitigate damage, and increase their enemies' fizzling chance. They are able to give others pips, increase everyone's power pip chance, and remove the pips of their enemies, again making them great at supporting.
